May 18, 1993 Sam Ellis Information Services Portland Community College PO Box 19000 Portland, OR 97280 Dear Sam, I have included an eclectic list of our campus computer wishes. If any of these don't qualify or you need more info, let me know. Implicit in some of these is the need of a bigger VAX but I didn't include that. These ideas have been discussed in several "I have a dream..." meetings but haven't had much more concrete planning than that. If this gets funded, I'm not sure we can cope with all these dreams at once, but it can't hurt to ask. Thanks for coordinating this. I'll have a draft of the "who are you and what do you have at your campus" survey for OCCCS (or OCEAN) next week. Sincerely, Ann L. Adams Director College Computer Services Linn-Benton Community College Proposal 1. Telephone Registration - Our classes are often taught at outlying locations, but currently registrations can only occur in person at 4 distinct locations. Telephone registration equipment and software would allow us to better serve our large, rural two-county area since students would be able to register from their locations.$80,000 2. Campus Information Utility - We have the beginning of a campus-wide access to information since our administrative computer and our LAN's are interconnected. From the desktop, an employee can access word-processing, spreadsheets, e-mail and desktop utilities as well as information on budgets, classes and students. We would like to leverage this information utility to include: a. Attachment of the campus library system $10,300 b. Equipment to allow the campus to dial-out to access the "outside world" such as Internet and for staff and students to dial-in to reach our information. $36,000 c. Equipment to allow our off-campus centers to be networked within their centers and to link to the campus information utility. $51,000 3. Student Bulletin Board Courses - Because of the large geographic area we serve, we would like to be able to provide instructors the opportunity to teach some classes using the "Bulletin Board" concept. This could also function as another way to communicate to our service district on items such as budgets and community activities.$6,000 4. Digital Communications Switch - This switch would allow the college to integrate voice and data communications into a seamless environment across the college, facilitating information exchange from the community into the college and from the college out to the service district.$265,000 Total request: $448,300
