MTH 245 is a survey course of discrete mathematics for non-physical science majors. Topics include systems of inequalities, linear programming, probability and probability distributions, and an introduction to descriptive statistics. The course emphasizes problem solving through the use of computer spreadsheets.
Upon completing MTH 245, you will be able to:
1. Apply mathematical methods to solve problems with confidence, persistence, and openness to alternate approaches.
2. Use a computer and Microsoft Excel to solve complex problems in business, biological and social sciences.
3. Collaborate to solve real world problems.
4. Communicate and interpret the results of mathematical problems.
More advanced mathematical topics using Excel:
There will be an emphasis on applications for all topics.

The first page of each Module gives you an overview of your responsibilities for that particular Module as well as either Module Outcomes or Course Outcomes for that Module.
There are assigned Readings from online or article sources for the course throughout the Modules. Please read the materials thoroughly and take notes as appropriate as you will be responsible for this material in the Competency and Credit Unit Assessments.
These Videos are meant to bring you a deeper understanding of the concepts within the Modules.
In this section you will find Self-checks on the Reading and Video material. Once you have completed the Videos, reviewed the assigned Reading, and understood the concepts presented, you will take this Self-check to test your understanding of the basic concepts and vocabulary in the Module. This is considered practice. Therefore, you may take it as many times as needed to gain mastery of the materials. Once you have scored at least 75% on the Self-check, you are ready to move on.
This is your opportunity to demonstrate what you have learned and will be used to assess your level of comprehension and competence of the learning outcomes for this course. Throughout the course, the assessments will measure your mastery of each of the outcomes. You must complete and prove competence in all Modules of the Credit Unit before gaining access to the Credit Unit Assessment.
Credit Unit Assessments are the only time you will need a Proctor. At the end of each Credit Unit, once you have completed all Modules within that unit, you will complete an assessment to demonstrate your comprehension of all concepts, vocabulary, and processes covered in the unit. These assessments will be the basis for your grade in this course.
