This Credit Unit will focus on the foundations of music. Before we can begin looking at music from other cultures, we must be able to talk about music through its most basic principles.
We will look at the philosophy behind music. We will explore questions such as: What is music? What does music mean in our culture and other cultures? We will then learn about technical aspects of music like pitch, rhythm, timbre, texture, form and other concepts that will help us understand and communicate intelligibly about western and non-western music.
Describe and discuss music using appropriate terminology relevant for the field of ethnomusicology.
Demonstrate an understanding of diverse peoples, cultural communities, and traditions while reflecting upon and challenging individual and societal ethnocentrism.
