
This module will focus on coding as a profession. It will include such topics as the differences between hospital and physician services, the different types of payers, the medical record, medical necessity, advance beneficiary notices, HIPAA, the need for compliance and rules and audits, and the OIG workplan.
Course Outcomes:
- Describe how to use the most current procedural coding
- Define upcoding and why it should be avoided
- Describe how to use the most current coding classification system
- Describe how to use the most current HCPCS coding
- Perform procedural coding
- Perform diagnostic coding

- Understand basic anatomy and functions of the respiratory system, hemic and lymphatic systems, and the mediastinum and diaphragm
- Define key terms relevant to these systems
- Provide practical advice to overcome the most common CPT coding dilemmas involving these systems
- Discuss application of the most-frequently used CPT modifiers
- Review diagnoses common to the respiratory system, the hemic and lymphatic systems, and the mediastinum and diaphragm
- Introduce HCPCS Level II codes and coding guidelines as they apply to these systems
- Supply hands-on examples and review material to improve your mastery of the above concepts
