Instructions:
In the third Module of this Credit Unit, you are going to be asked to write a paper on a "random act of kindness"; therefore your assignment before you are required to write the paper is to to "volunteer" and do random acts of kindness or activities that will impact the lives of someone in some positive way to whom you have a bias against.
Think about this project and develop and implement a plan so that you can do something for someone from this group of people who you know that you have a bias against.
Goals:
- Do something that you wouldn't normally do or something that is out of the ordinary for you.
- Do something that takes you out of your comfort zone.
- Make it significant to someone; put some thought into it.
- Make it as anonymous as possible to the recipient(s).
- Expand your understanding of someone else’s beliefs, backgrounds, and culture. Choose to confront your biases.
- Do something that is completely new and innovative and creative. Don’t do something that you have previously done and you can’t count what you have done in your past.
Some Ideas:
- At least 3 times, share a meal with a homeless person.
- At least 5 times, verbally acknowledge the accomplishments of someone who you "dislike" and thank them for who they are.
- Make a point to get to know something significant about someone who you encounter daily who you have a bias against. Remember those facts. For 3 days, ask about that thing from the other person.
- At least 5 times, do the one thing that you hate doing the most, but do it for someone who you have a bias against.
NOTE: You will not submit the actual paper until later, but you can get start thinking about it now and you can get started on it now as it will take some time to complete.
