Now is your opportunity to demonstrate what you have learned about mitosis and meiosis. After completing this Competency Assessment you will be submitting a copy of the document below for grading through the course website. Upon completion of this Competency Assessment with the minimum required score, you will have completed the Cell Reproduction Module. In this Competency Assessment you will be drawing sketches of each phase of mitosis and meiosis. For this reason, you will need to print the following document:

Pay close attention to the color coding and labeling instructions! You are to assume the cell that you are sketching has 3 pairs of homologous chromosomes, meaning 6 total chromosomes. You are instructed to use three colors, one color for each pair of homologous chromosomes. This is a different color scheme than your textbook! This means that you must have a strong grasp of the terminology and chromosomal structures presented in the Module. You will lose points, and potentially not achieve the minimum required grade to move forward, if you do not properly color code.

Also, be sure to draw the chromosomes in the appropriate form for each stage:

You will also need to label any pertinent structures in your sketches. If it is a structure that occurs in multiple stages, you need only label it one time. If you are unsure of any of these instructions, which are also in the document you will print out, be sure to contact your Assessment Evaluator for clarification.

This Competency Assessment requires you to hand draw the phases of the cell cycle and meiosis, so you will need some way to create an image of your work and create a file that can be uploaded into Canvas. There a few ways this can be accomplished:

The color coding and labeling are what your Assessment Evaluator will be using to determine your grasp on the material, so it is essential that whatever form of submission you use, your sketches are clear and easy to see! If you are using a camera or webcam to create an image, do not attempt to fit both pages into one image. Take two separate pictures and submit both for evaluation.
